Welsh & Celtic Studies
Online study support is needed more than ever in these strange times, and we are excited to announce that our comprehensive range of GCSE and A-Level relevant online educational activities and resources are well underway.
The Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies can offer a variety of resources to aid students in their studies, all delivered by internationally recognised experts in their fields. Available resources include:
Videos
Example of our students research - Rhodri Siôn
A film produced by Rhodri Siôn from Nebo, Llanrwst, who graduated in Professional Welsh in 2016. This is the result of his ambitious project for the undergraduate 'Bro a Bywyd' module. The work received great praise from the examiners, and was awarded a First Class mark. The film 'Cymru Dafydd ap Gwilym' provides a clear and concise introduction to the life and work of one of the great poets of Wales and Europe in the recent Middle Ages.
Example of our Lecturers Research - Dr Rhianedd Jewell
Dr Rhianedd Jewel is Lecturer in Professional Welsh in the Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies. Her research focus is in translation, particularly literary translations from European languages into Welsh. This lecture is based on Rhianedd’s research into the Welsh translations of Samuel Beckett’s Samuel Beckett’s absurdist plays. These plays have only been tackled by two Welsh translators, both of whom were renowned Welsh poets, dramatists and authors in their own right: Gwyn Thomas and Saunders Lewis. A close analysis of their Beckettian translations shows how they adapted the French plays for a Welsh audience, making them both linguistically and culturally Welsh. One of these translators, however, was far less faithful to the original work than the other, and the resulting Welsh play was in fact significantly different from Beckett’s creation.
This lecture considers questions such as ‘to what extent should a translator choose to adapt a piece’ and ‘what do those choices teach us in turn about the translator?’
