A new Aberystwyth University webinar series covering all key and hot topics when studying in the Sixth Form.
This webinar series introduces any given topic related to life in the sixth form and beyond. Each webinar will look at a different topic that you'll need to research throughout this period. Watching these webinars will allow you to make the most of Sixth Form, attending University fairs physically and virtually, Open Days and so much more.

Sixth Form
Have you just started Year 12/ FE Year 1?
Trying to find your way through the maze that is your new Sixth Form/ College life?
Looking forward to what the next two years will bring, but would like some advice to help you on your journey?
Watch this quick fire 30 minute session, where we look at six key areas on how you can make the most of your Sixth Form life! Areas we’ll be focusing on include:
- Things to consider during your Sixth Form academic journey
- The importance of engagement with others during Sixth Form
- Effective self-planning
- Why super and extra curricular activities are critical
- Consideration of next steps
- And don’t forget… a lucky dip section with some final hints and tips!
Jeff Chilton, one of Aberystwyth’s renowned Student Recruitment Officers, will provide his own experiences alongside current students and will be posing questions for you to consider in each topic area.
Free Time
This session will cover a little bit of everything, to help you make the most of the time you’ve got until heading off to university. Be that your evenings, weekends, half terms, or full summer holiday; there is plenty of useful – and often fun! – things you can be getting on with that will help you in your journey to Higher Education.
We will look at:
- Academic/ subject-related opportunities to get involved in to help boost your personal statement
- Clubs/ groups to help build skills and versatility
- Part-time work to develop skills and experience, as well as financial benefits
- Learning skills for independent living such as cooking and cleaning
- Allowing yourself to have fun, take breaks, have busy social lives, and still manage your time wisely
The main purpose of this session is to motivate students to use their time as best as they can whilst at sixth form, while also promoting a healthy balance between school and leisure activities – it’s just as important to have breaks and allow yourself to have fun as it is to work hard!

Open Days
Are you starting to delve into the world of University Open Days?
Have you been to an Open Day already and got more in your diary or aren’t ensure where to start?
Do you feel nervous yet exciting about the thought of visiting a new town or city?
We know your time is precious and so, wherever you are at in your Open Day research journey, this session will help you not only maximise the time you spend attending them, but also how to make the most of the opportunity of visiting the universities you are interested in.
Areas we’ll be focussing on include:
- Planning to do before you attend… and follow up afterwards
- Must dos at the Open Day itself
- Insider questions you should always ask
- Exploring the location (town/ city)
- What to consider if the Open Day is virtual
- Hearing from an academic expert and recent Aber graduate
Attending university Open Days is one of the most important pieces of research you will do when choosing a university, so come and hear from our experts who can help you conduct this research effectively, which in turn, will help you make informed decisions.

Preparing your Personal Statement
In this webinar, lasting no more than 30 minutes, we will be providing 6 key areas that you need to consider and the tips and techniques you can take on board for Making the Most of … Preparing your Personal Statement.
Dafydd Morse, one of Aberystwyth’s renowned Student Recruitment Officers, will provide his own experiences alongside current students and will be posing questions for you to consider.
This is a great chance for Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) to hear about how to get the best of your time in the sixth form, and make the right decisions related to University and beyond.
There will be lots of opportunities to ask questions. The format is accessible, friendly, informative and participative.
University Fairs (Face to Face)
Higher Education Fairs/ Careers Exhibitions can be busy and overwhelming events where it can be easy to collect 50 prospectuses without any useful insight. These events, if you know how to approach them, are a fantastic opportunity to gather incredibly valuable information to help you make informed decisions about your future.
This session will provide advice and guidance to help you feel prepared to approach these events in the best possible mindset in order to ensure you get everything you can out of your time.
We will be focusing on these six key areas:
- Researching institutions beforehand
- Organising your own priorities for universities you may consider
- Knowing what to say and how to say it
- How to effectively use your time at the event
- Keeping an open mind and making sure each interaction is worthwhile
- What to do with all of this information afterwards!
If you will be attending a HE Fair or Careers Convention this session will help you get everything you can out of the event so you can move forward in the process without feeling overwhelmed by the options available to you.

University Interviews
In this webinar we provide 6 key areas that you need to consider and the tips and techniques you can take on board for Making the Most of … University Interviews.
The session will cover the following topics –
- Using your Personal Statement as a springboard for your interview
- How to prepare for your interview.
- What sort of questions to expect.
- Body language.
- Do I have to ask a question?
- What to do after the University Interview.
University Fairs (Virtual)
If you'd like to know more about Universities and the different courses they offer but you'd prefer to do so from the comfort of your own home, then Virtual Fairs might be perfect for you. Loads of Universities participate in these fairs, there's a myriad of differeny handy links and best of all, you'll be able to speak to representatives of each of these Universities to ask as many tricky questions as you'd like.
The session will introduce you to Virtual Fairs and will cover the following topics –
- The different types of Virtual Fairs available for students e.g. UCAS, UK Uni Search and more.
- A breakdown of what you can do and see during the fair.
- Things you can do to prepare for a Virtual Fair.
- A tour around a Virtual Fair, for students to get an insight on what to expect.
- Key questions for you to ask during the fair.
- How to sign-up to a fair.
A current Aberystwyth University student will take part in the session to demonstrate the valuable information they gained from attending similar events.
