Overview

This 5-credit, face to face module. It will help students to develop an appreciation for fungi, learning about their amazing diversity of form, their habitats and how to identify them. The module will cover observational drawing in graphite, charcoal and pen, and watercolour techniques to depict a variety of fungi species and forms, with accuracy of colour and detail. A context of relevant historical and contemporary artists work will be given to support the study.

This is an ideal course for anyone interested in Natural History, students undertaking field studies courses, as well as art and design courses, and the biological sciences, who wish to develop their knowledge and gain the skills needed to depict their subjects.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:   

  1. Demonstrate techniques which allow the accurate depiction, in watercolour, of the topside and underside of different fungi and their surrounding habitat.
  2. Demonstrate problem solving and exploration of techniques and colour mixing.
  3. Demonstrate analysis of the artwork of historical and contemporary Natural History painters.

Assessments

  1. Visual diary (70%)
  2. One completed watercolour painting (30%)
