Overview

This module aims to provide a strong foundation in numbers and number operations, percentages, sets and probability, algebra (including linear, quadratic and simultaneous equations), coordinates and functions. The course is delivered via a series of online pre-recorded lectures and optional live workshops allowing students to learn through practice.

Programme

Activities and tasks will be embedded into each unit so students can practise the techniques they have learned and develop their skills. Students will be encouraged to share their own work and participate in discussions on Blackboard. Alongside the learning materials on Blackboard the tutor will be on hand via email to answer any queries and provide guidance throughout the course.

Content will be delivered in 9 sessions with an additional session for summary and revision.

  1. Numbers and number operations with integers.
  2. Numbers and number operations with fractions and decimals.
  3. Percentages.
  4. Sets and Probability.
  5. Algebraic expressions, factorization.
  6. Linear equations, changing subject of a formula.
  7. Linear equations word problems, inequalities, quadratic equations.
  8. Functions (intercepts and gradients), coordinates, plotting functions.
  9. Simultaneous equations and word problems.
  10. Summary and Revision.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Confidently solve problems in arithmetic (involving integeres, fractions and decimals) and percentages (including reverse and compound percentages)
  2. Identify primes and find prime factorisation of positive integers.
  3. Define sets, use Venn-diagrams and carry out calculations in probability, including equally likely outcomes and tree diagrams.
  4. Work with algebraic expressions to simplify and factorise polynomials and solve linear, simultaneous and quadratic equations including word problems.
  5. Plot and understand functions and read off coordinates of points, identify if any two functions are parallel or perpendicular.

Assessments

  1. 10 x short assignments – take-away exam (40% of the overall mark)
  2. 2 hour written exam (60% of the overall mark)

Reading Suggestions

Reading suggestions will be offered throughout the course.
