Overview

This module will introduce the National Library of Wales and its collections to those with an interest in historical research.
This is a hands-on course involving a series of tours, presentations and practical work, provided by a tutor from Aberystwyth University and expert staff from the National Library of Wales. The module assumes no prior knowledge or experience and will offer students an introduction both to the resources and facilities available at the National Library, and an introduction to general research skills and academic practice. There will be opportunities to see at first hand some of the exciting work carried out by the Library. Students will also be able to identify and order material to develop a research project around their own interests, with support from the tutor.

Day 1: on location at the National Library of Wales
1. Welcome and Introduction to the module
2. Introduction to Reading Room and finding aids - lecture and workshop
3. Tour of the NLW
4. Beyond the NLW: Lecture on other research resources in Ceredigion
5. Independent research

Day 2: on location at the National Library of Wales
1. Research and Study Skills Lecture
2. People’s Collection Wales: Presentation and practical work
3. Introduction to the Welsh Broadcast Archive - Lecture and workshop
4. Volunteering at NLW -Talk and tour
5. Conclusion and Assessment Guidance - lecture
6. Independent research


Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify and evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources held at NLW which can be used for historical research.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of current projects at NLW which are of interest to family and local historians.
  3. Perform active independent research utilising good academic practice.

Assessments

  1. Test - In class Test (20%)
  2. Research proposal - Written Assignment (80%)

This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements.

What Do I Need?

As this is an online course, you would need the following:

  • Internet access.
  • Access to a laptop or computer with a web camera and microphone; the use of headphones might also be of benefit.
  • Use of the Chrome web-browser where possible.
