Overview

Members of the Lepidoptera, butterflies, form an important part of many ecosystems and issues relating to the conservation of butterflies and their habitats often arise.
The course develops entomological skills and focuses on accurate observation and identification. Recording information in terms of morphology, flight patterns, behaviour and habitat preferences will enable species to be identified with the use of guides and publication and their ecology understood.
This course provides useful background knowledge for the Butterfly Survey Course (Level 2).

Programme

During the course, student will study the following topics:

1. Observe and identify a range of Lepidoptera (butterflies)
2. Use identification guides and other publications
3. Use the correct terminology
4. Observe and study the behavioural patterns including flight, feeding and breeding behaviours
5. Visit a range of diverse habitats
6. Link occurrence to habitat preferences, food plants of larvae and adults
7. Study the ecology of various species
8. Develop and use field observation skills
9. Recording observations

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify a range of Lepidoptera (Butterfly) species;
  • Explain the behaviour and distribution /specific habitat requirements of Lepidoptera species;
  • Record field observations of Lepidoptera species identifications and associated habitats;
  • Apply knowledge of Lepidoptera, field observations, identifications, notes and research to complete a portfolio.

Assessments

  • Written identification test
  • Portfolio
  • Field Notebook

Reading Suggestions
