Overview

This is a practical course on imaging the local landscape using pastels and other compatible media.

Programme

This is a practical course on imaging the local landscape using pastels and other compatible media. Workshops are supported by theoretical discussion on the meaning of “romanticism and realism” in contemporary and historical Welsh landscape painting in general, and in the work of artists who have used pastels. The local landscape is referred to throughout the course as an illustration of the interconnection between artists, their influences, and their location.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  • Demonstrate a variety of techniques using pastels to a) record on location and b) make a studio painting.
  • Find and record and use significant landscape motifs planned through the visual diary and poster.
  • Conceive and execute a landscape painting in pastel and compatible media from a variety of source material.
  • Describe and highlight the uses of metaphor in Landscape Painting through a poster.
  • Research and utilize information and imagery of relevant landscape genres within the visual diary.

Assessments

  • Poster (this will be a class Project) 20 %
  • Portfolio and self-directed study 60%
