'Etty', a one-woman play performed by Susan Stein

The David Davies Memorial Institute (DDMI) was pleased to host, “Etty,” a one-woman play performed by Susan Stein and directed by Austin Pendleton. The play is based on the diaries and letters of Etty Hillesum a young Jewish woman living in the Netherlands under Nazi occupation.
Release of 7th Davies Paper in the 'Africa Series'

Mark Simmonds's Davies Paper is entitled ‘Reflections on UK Africa Relations: Britain and Africa after 50 years’. The Davies Paper is a version of his speech delivered at the University of Birmingham on 21 November 2014, as part of the BISA ‘Africa and International Studies’ working group series on Britain and Africa after 50.

The sixth Davies Paper of the 'Africa Series' is by Oluwaseun Bamidele from Department of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Faith Academy, Canaanland Ota, Nigeria, West Africa and entitled 'Transnational Terrorism, Armed Conflict and Fragility in African States'.

Claude Kabemba's Davies Paper is entitled ‘Can Britain Break with its Colonial Past? A critique of the British government’s and British extractive companies’ role in Africa.’ The Davies Paper is a version of his speech delivered at the Scottish Parliament on 27 February 2014, as part of the BISA Africa and International Studies working group series on ‘Britain and Africa after 50’. It draws upon the author’s professional experience.
Davies Paper on Food and Water Security Conference now available

Davies Paper - Africa Series #4 is now available. This Davies Paper revisits and reviews the three-day international food and water security conference partly funded and organized by the DDMI. The conference was entitled 'The Human Dimensions of Climate Change: the Politics of Food and Water Security in Africa.' Generous financial and other support was also provided by C3W, IBERS, the Department of International Politics, and Aberystwyth University.

The DDMI is pleased to announce the release of the 3rd paper in the Africa Series of The Davies Papers. The paper is written by Daniel E. Agbiboa, doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford, and is entitled 'The Westgate Terrorist Attack and the Transformation of Al-Shabab: A Global Jihadist Perspective.'

On 22 March 2014, the E.H. Carr Student Conference was held for the second time in the Main Hall of the International Politics Department at Aberystwyth University. The conference is student-organised and led. This year’s topic, ‘The Arab-Israeli Conflict’ and the event itself attracted a large number of attendees. DDMI 'Past Publications' page Updated

Reorganisation of the DDMI Archives uncovered some long-lost publications from when the Institute was still independently based on Chatwick Street in central London. What was found is the entire run of the DDMI 'Occasional Papers' Series, Nos. 1-12. The author, titles, and other details of these papers have been added to the 'Past Publications' page of the DDMI website.

Interpol and the DDMI were proud to host a special guest lecture by Amb. Richard Butler entitled 'Iraq Was Disarmed: the invaders didn't find any WMD because there weren't any to find'. Butler is a distinguished Australian diplomat and recognized expert in nuclear arms control and disarmament. Butler's lecture took place on Monday, 10 March, in the Main Hall, International Politics Building. Vidcast of his lecture is available.

Professor Rosemary Hollis is a leading analyst of Middle Eastern affairs. She is presently Professor of Middle East Policy Studies and director of the Olive Tree Programme at City University London. She delivered her DDMI Annual Lecture, 'Britain and the Palestine Question, 1914-2014,'' in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building on 27 February 2014. A vidcast of her lecture is now available.

The DDMI is pleased to announce that the first Davies Paper of the 'Africa Series' is now available for download. Click above or 'Publications' at left. The Davies Paper - Africa Series No.1 is by Dr Essien D. Essien, University of Uyo, Nigeria. The paper examines Nigerian civil society and the extent to which it can further socially inclusive sustainable development in Nigeria.

The 6th Davies Forum took place on 9 December in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building. The speakers were Professor Björn Weiler from the Department of History & Welsh History, and Drs Claudia Hillebrand and Alistair Shepherd and PhD Candidate Robert Kammel from the Department of International Politics. They discussed: 'What will Germany’s new coalition government mean for Germany, Europe, and the world?’
Dr Helen Brocklehurst guest lecture: 'State of play: securities of childhood - insecurities of children'

The DDMI and its International Politics Research Group were pleased to host Dr Helen Brocklehurst of the Department of Politics and International Relations, Swansea University. Brocklehurst is an IR specialist with a strong interest in children and childhood and their relationship to international politics. Her guest lecture took place on 22 November in the Meetings Room of the International Politics Building.

International Conference: International Relations Theory Today

The DDMI and Department of International Politics hosted one of Interpol’s landmark international conferences. It was a full, lively, and important discussion of the current state of IR theory by a great gathering of IR scholars. The conference began on the 11th of September and ended on the 13th.
