Full details of individual Scholarships

£1,000 pa

Under the Will of the late Mr Evan Morgan of Liverpool, a trust fund was created for the provision of entrance scholarships tenable at Aberystwyth University.  The Scholarships are usually tenable for three years.
Conditions of award:

a) Eligible candidates for the award of scholarships shall be young persons who (or whose parents or one or other of them) were born or are normally resident in the Principality of Wales and who have for not less than two years at any time been in attendance as pupils at a secondary school in the Principality of Wales.

b) Each candidate must have a knowledge of the Welsh and English languages together with Mathematics or Natural Science sufficient to satisfy the Senate of the University that the applicant is a fit and proper person to proceed to a course at the college with a reasonable prospect of satisfactorily completing it.  Mathematics is interpreted as including any one of the following subjects: pure mathematics, applied mathematics or mathematics, while any one of the following subjects may be taken as a natural science: chemistry, physics, botany, zoology, biology, geography, geology. General science is included in the term ‘natural science’ but as a qualifying subject only.

c) Candidates must possess a General Certificate of Secondary Education or a General Certificate of Education, or some equivalent qualification in each of the subjects concerned. For these Scholarships a pass at GCSE in Welsh First Language: language, or Welsh First Language: literature or Welsh Second Language: extended, is regarded as an equivalent qualification in Welsh, and Welsh Second Language: foundation is also accepted as an equivalent qualification.

(a) Open Scholarships – £1,000 pa

The Scholarships are usually tenable for the usual length of the course and do not require residential or other qualifications. (b) Edward Hamer Scholarship – £1,000 pa

This Scholarship was founded in 1993 under a bequest made to the University by Mr Edward Hamer, Aberystwyth. It was awarded for the first time in 1994 and will thereafter only be available for award once every three years.

(c) Elizabeth Richards Scholarship – £1,000 pa

This Scholarship was founded in 1992 under a bequest made to the University by Miss Elizabeth Richards, Aberystwyth. It was last awarded in 2013 and is generally available for award once every three years.

(d) The Hudson-Williams Scholarship – £1,000 pa

The Hudson-Williams Scholarship was established in 1995 in memory of Mr Alun Hudson-Williams, formerly senior lecturer in the Department of Classics. It is awarded to candidates who intend to read for a degree in the Faculty of Arts.  The scholarship is available every fourth year and is usually tenable for three years.

(e) John Hughes Scholarships – £1,000 pa

Three Scholarships, one award to be made each year, founded in 1938 by the late Miss Elizabeth Phillips Hughes, Barry.

(a) Pembrokeshire Scholarship – £1,000 pa

A Scholarship founded in 1994, from a donation by Mr Colin Evans OBE, of Haverfordwest, a former student of the University, and Schools Liaison Officer from 1989 to 1994. The Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of satisfactory performance at the Entrance Scholarship Examination, to candidates living in the county of Pembrokeshire. Candidates should have attended either (a) a school or college in Pembrokeshire, or (b) a  school/college at Cardigan or Whitland, for at least three years between the ages of 11 and 18.

(b) Bryn Terfel Scholarship – £1,000 pa

The Bryn Terfel Scholarship was established in 1998, with the proceeds of a concert generously given by Mr Terfel as part of Aberystwyth University’s 125th Anniversary Celebrations.

1. The Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of performance in the Entrance Scholarship Examination and in accordance with the institution’s Regulations governing the award of Entrance Scholarships.
2. The Scholarship will be open to candidates born in Wales who are eligible for admission as mature entrants, and who intend to read for a degree within the Faculty of Arts at Aberystwyth University.
3. The Scholarship will be available every fourth year.
4. The Scholarship will usually be tenable for three years.

(c) The Evan Bolle-Jones Scholarship – £1,000 pa

A Scholarship established in 1997 from a donation by Dr Evan Bolle-Jones, a former student of the College - BSc Chemistry and Botany, 1945, MSc, 1947.The Scholarship shall be awarded on the strength of the Entrance Scholarship Examination and in accordance with the institution’s Regulations governing the award of Entrance Scholarships.  It will be open to candidates who intend to read for a degree scheme in the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences, available every fourth year, and usually tenable for three years.

(d) Dewi and Annie Williams Scholarships – £1,000 pa

Scholarships founded in 1996 from a bequest by the late Mrs Annie Llewellyn Williams. One Scholarship will be awarded to a candidate who intends to read for Single or Joint honours in Geography; the other to a  candidate who intends to read for Single or Joint honours in the Department of Welsh. Both Scholarships will usually be tenable for three years.

(e) The Loveluck Scholarship – £1,000 pa

The scholarship is offered to a candidate from a maintained school in Wales, who intends to read for a degree in Biological Sciences. It is awarded every fourth year and is usually tenable for 3 years.

(f) The Miss S A Davies Scholarship – £1,000 pa

A Scholarship founded in 1929 under the Will of Miss Sarah Anne Davies, Llandysul. This Scholarship is confined to Welsh-speaking girls whose parents reside or are rate-payers in the Parish of Llandysul.

(g) Thomas Davies Scholarship – £1,000 pa

A Scholarship founded in 1911 by Mr Thomas Davies, Bootle. The holder of this Scholarship shall undertake to pursue a degree scheme which includes courses in Chemistry and Agriculture.

(h) Sir Alfred Jones Scholarship – £1,000 pa

A Scholarship founded in 1914 under the Will of Sir Alfred L Jones.  This Scholarship is offered in alternate years to candidates whose parents or guardians reside in the Borough of Carmarthen, and in every other year to
candidates whose parents or guardians reside in any part of Wales (including Monmouthshire), other than in the Borough of Carmarthen. In 2014 the latter condition will apply.

(i) The Thomas Lewis Scholarship – £1,000 pa

A Scholarship founded in 1953 under the Will of the late Miss E C Lewis of Pennal, Machynlleth.The Scholarship is confined to candidates who, prior to entering the University, have been residents for three years at least within three miles of the Parish Church of Pennal, or in the Parish of Isygarreg in the county of Montgomery.

(j) David Morgan Thomas of Caterham Memorial Scholarships – £1,000 pa

Scholarships founded in 1922 under the Will of Miss Elizabeth Ann Thomas.  These Scholarships are confined to the sons of Nonconformist Ministers. Candidates should state clearly on the Entrance Scholarship application form if they believe they are eligible to be considered for this award.

(k) Joseph Thomas Scholarship – £1,000 pa

A Scholarship founded in 1911 under the Will of Mr Joseph Thomas, Haverfordwest.  This Scholarship is confined to male candidates born in the counties of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire or Ceredigion, or in the town and county of Haverfordwest.

Reverend Herbert Morgan Scholarship – £1,000 pa

A Scholarship founded in 1946 under the Will of the Reverend Herbert Morgan.  This Scholarship is confined to Welsh candidates. The award shall normally be made to an entrance candidate on the results of the Entrance Scholarship Examination, but the Senate may award the Scholarship for a period to a student in residence pursuing an undergraduate course of study.

(a) The Aberfan Children’s Scholarship

This Scholarship is provided from the income of a gift made to the University in 1968 by the Welsh Society of San Francisco in memory of the children who were killed in the Aberfan disaster of 1966. Its purpose is to encourage among young persons living and attending school in Aberfan the desire to attend University.

1. The Scholarship shall be awarded annually by the University to a young person of school age, whose parents were living in Aberfan at the time of the disaster, or if there is no suitably qualified applicant, to a person of school age living in Merthyr Tydfil.
2. In both of the above cases, the order of preference shall be: (a) Applicants who propose to enter Cardiff University, as first year undergraduate students; (b) Applicants who propose to enter any of the Accredited Institutions of the University of Wales, as first year undergraduate students.
3. The value of the Scholarship shall be approximately £800 per annum and this amount may be divided between two or more suitably qualified applicants. The Scholarship will be tenable for up to three years.
4. Forms of application for the Scholarship may be obtained from the Head of the Academic Office (Ref. JP), University Registry, Cathays Park, Cardiff, CF10 3NS and must be returned to him/her by 1 June of the year in which the applicant proposes to enter the University.

(b) D Lloyd Thomas Memorial Scholarship – £600 pa

This Scholarship is provided from the income of a gift made to the University in June 1989 by the family and friends of the late D Lloyd Thomas, BSc PhD (London), a native of Maesteg, a graduate of the University and sometime teacher at Imperial College, London:

1. A scholarship, called the D Lloyd Thomas Memorial Scholarship, of the value of approximately £600, shall be awarded from time to time by the University, provided that a suitable candidate is forthcoming.
2. The Scholarship shall be available, normally for a three year period, at each of the Constituent Institutions at Aberystwyth and Swansea in rotation.
3. Candidates for the scholarship shall be Welshspeaking, shall have been accepted for admission to an undergraduate degree scheme at the relevant institution, and shall be able to satisfy the matriculation requirements of the University.  In addition they shall either have been born, or have been resident, within the County of Mid-Glamorgan. Preference shall be given to any such candidate who has been born, or has been resident, within the Maesteg area (as defined by the boundaries of the Borough of Ogwr).
4. In the event of there being a number of candidates for the scholarship able to satisfy the conditions of Regulation 3 above, the award of the scholarship shall be determined on the basis of candidates’ relative  performances in the GCE Advanced Level or equivalent examination.
5. No scholarship shall be awarded except to a candidate of sufficient merit.
6. A student who has already entered upon a scheme of study for a degree of the University shall not be eligible for an award.
7. Subject to receipt by the University of a satisfactory report from the institution of the conduct and progress of the Scholar at the end of each academic year, the scholarship shall be renewable for a further two years.
8. In the event that a scholarship is not awarded in a particular year, any accumulated income from the Fund shall be added to the capital sum and the next competition for the award shall be held in the following year.
9. In the event that a scholarship is not awarded for three consecutive years due to there being no eligible candidates, the residential qualification laid down in paragraph 3 may be waived to enable an award to be made in the following year.
10. Applications should be submitted to the Registrar of the relevant Institution, no later than 15th September in that year.

(c) Dr Howell Rees Scholarship – £500 pa

These Scholarships are provided from the income of a bequest made to the University by the late Howell Rees CBE MRCS LRCP (1847-1933) of Cardiff. General Scholarship:

1. A “Dr Howell Rees Scholarship”, of the annual value of £500 will be awarded by the University on the results of the Entrance Scholarships Examinations conducted by or on behalf of Aberystwyth University, Cardiff University, and Swansea University respectively every third year.  Enquiries should be directed to the Registrar of the Institution.
2. The Scholarship will not be awarded unless there is a candidate of adequate merit.
3. Candidates for the scholarship shall be eligible in the following order of preference:
   (i) Those who were born in Cwmaman (in the county of Carmarthenshire) or Brynaman or Gwaun-cae-gurwen or Cwmgorse;
   (ii) Those whose parents were living within the boundaries defined in (i) at the time of the candidate’s birth;
   (iii) Those who were born within the county of Carmarthenshire.
4. Every candidate for the scholarship will be required to furnish two certificates of good character and to satisfy the authorities of the Accredited Institution recommending the award that he/she is able to speak the Welsh language.
5. Every candidate must be qualified to matriculate in the University and must not, at the time of the award, have entered upon a scheme of study for a degree therein.
6. The holder of the scholarship will be required to pursue a scheme of study for a degree of the University at Aberystwyth University, or Cardiff University, or Swansea University, at thechoice of the scholar. With the approval of the University, the scholar may transfer from one to another of these three Institutions during the tenure of his/her scholarship.
7. Subject to the receipt by the University of a satisfactory report from his/her Institution of the conduct and progress of the scholar at the end of each academic year, the tenure of the scholarship shall be for three years.
8. Applications for information with regard to the examination, and for admission to the examination, shall be made to the Registrar of the Institution at which the examination for which the candidate desires to present himself/herself, is being held.
9. Every candidate to whom a scholarship is awarded must, within three weeks of the publication of the results of the examination, inform the Registrar of the Institution which he/she proposes to enter, of his/her acceptance or non-acceptance of the scholarship.

(d) Price Davies Scholarships – £400 pa

The Price Davies Scholarships are provided from the income of a bequest made to the University in 1900 by the late Mr Price Davies of Leeds:

1. Three Scholarships, called Price Davies Scholarships, each of the annual value of £400, shall be offered for competition each year.
2. The Scholarships shall be available annually on the results of the Entrance Scholarship Examination held at Aberystwyth University, and subject to the receipt by the University of a satisfactory report from the Institution of the conduct and progress of the Scholar at the end of each academic year, shall be tenable for three years, with possible renewal for a fourth year.
3. The award of a scholarship shall be conditional upon a successful candidate qualifying to matriculate in the University. A student who has already entered upon a scheme of study for a degree in the University shall not be eligible for candidature.
4. No scholarship shall be awarded except to a candidate of adequate merit.
5. One of the conditions of holding a Price Davies Scholarship under this section shall be the pursuance of a scheme of study for an initial degree in Arts or in Science at Aberystwyth University.
6. Applications for particulars with regard to the examination, and for admission to the examination, shall be made to the Registrar of Aberystwyth University (c/o Recruitment and Marketing Office, Student Welcome Centre, Penglais Campus, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion SY23 3FB).
7. Every candidate to whom a scholarship is awarded must, within three weeks of the publication of the results of the examination, inform the Registrar of the Institution of his/her acceptance or non-acceptance of the scholarship.
