The University community was greatly saddened to learn of the loss of eminent Welsh historian Professor Geraint H. Jenkins, who died aged 78.
Dr Eryn White, Reader in the Department of History and Welsh History, was a former student of Professor Jenkins. Paying tribute, she said:
"We were very sad to learn of the death of Professor Geraint H Jenkins.
"A long serving former member of staff and head of department, he taught in our Department of Welsh History for 25 years from 1968 until 1993.
"An authority on early modern Wales, Geraint was a thorough and tireless researcher. He authored several standard and influential publications in the field of Welsh history - specialising in Iolo Morganwg, but also writing more widely about the shaping of modern Wales, the Welsh language, and about Welsh sport.
"Along with being a greatly respected academic and a prolific writer, he is remembered as a witty and entertaining lecturer who enjoyed conveying his knowledge to audiences across Wales, including regularly at the Eisteddfod.
"Our heartfelt condolences go to Geraint’s family."
