Introduction to Forensic Psychology

Overview

A forensic psychologist applies psychological theory to a criminal investigation to help understand psychological problems associated with criminal behaviour, and the treatment of those who have committed offences. This course introduces students to the basic terminology used in forensic psychology and explores the role of a forensic psychologist, within the criminal justice system. 
Students will study various psychological theories of crime, explore case examples and evaluate eyewitness testimony. The module will critically assess the definition of a violent offender, explore the links between mental illness and crime and review the framework within which offenders are assessed and treated. Students will have opportunities to discuss various psychological theories and formulate their own views in response to set reading on forensic psychology.  
This online learning course will enable students to study from home and participate in an online community of other students that are interested in learning more about forensic psychology. 

Programme

Activities and tasks will be embedded into each unit so students can practise the techniques they have learned and develop their skills. Students will be encouraged to share their own work and participate in discussions on Blackboard. Alongside the learning materials on Blackboard the tutor will be on hand via email to answer any queries and provide guidance throughout the course. They will also participate in the online discussions.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

1. ​​Explain the role of a forensic psychologist.
2. Critically evaluate theories of criminal behaviour.
3. Describe eyewitness testimony and evaluate the accuracy.
4. Discuss and analyse the assessment and treatment of offenders.

1. 1 x quiz (10%)
2. Discussion Board contributions (20%)
3. Short Essay 1000 words (70%)
