Overview
This course aims to give you the tools to develop your counselling skills. These skills are essential to many professionals, but they can also be used effectively on your personal relationships to improve the quality of communication. During this course, you will be introduced to the theories of communication and active listening. You will also have the opportunity to reflect on your own progress, by doing practical sessions and role play, receiving tutor and peer feedback on class activities. You will also be encouraged to keep a reflective journal during this course, to reflect on your own experience. This will give you the opportunity to focus on your personal development during the course.
Programme
This is an online course, with weekly live teaching sessions delivered via Microsoft Teams. Activities and tasks will be embedded into each unit so students can practice the techniques they have learned and develop their skills.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate a range of active listening techniques including use of open/closed questions; observation; paraphrasing and summarizing; prompts; and body language.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of your own and others’ listening skills.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of solution oriented brief therapy.
- Demonstrate the use of listening and questioning skills appropriate to solution oriented brief therapy.
- Relate your use of listening techniques to theories of communication cycle and active listening.
Assessments
- Reflective Essay 1500 words (50%)
- 10 minute filmed roleplay (25%)
- Evaluation of the filmed roleplay 500 words (25%)

Entry Requirements
This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements.
What Do I Need?
As this is an online course, you would need the following:
• Internet access
• Access to a laptop or computer with a web camera and microphone; the use of headphones might also be of benefit
• Use of the Chrome web-browser where possible.
