Overview
This inspiring course which will cover a variety of drawing and watercolour techniques and materials for depicting a wide variety shell types, their forms, textures, patterns and colours. This is an ideal course for anyone undertaking field studies as well as Art courses, who wish to develop their observational, drawing and painting skills and knowledge of this varied subject. The techniques and styles of contemporary and historical artists will also be discussed. Demonstrations, individual advice and assistance as well as handouts will be given throughout each session. A wide variety of specimens will be available to work from.
Programme
Throughout this course we will also have special access to the super shell collection from IBERS. Please also do bring any interesting and inspiring shells you find / have to work from, maybe shells with special memories from holidays or your local beaches. The course is taught through 3 face to face teaching sessions which will include demonstrations, handouts and individual assistance covering a variety of drawing and watercolour techniques. The initial focus of the course is on exploration and experimentation, which will be documented in your study book, as the course progresses, we will then work towards creating more resolved studies.
No previous artistic experience required
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate techniques which allow the accurate depiction through drawing and painting of the form, textures, colours, patterns and detail of a variety shell and mollusc types.
- Demonstrate problem solving and the exploration and development of the different drawing and painting techniques covered throughout the course and the use of different drawing and painting materials.
- Demonstrate analysis of the role and artwork of historical and contemporary Natural History painters, their techniques and use of composition.
