Overview

This five credit, self-paced online module is suitable for students who are undertaking field studies as well as students who wish to broaden their observational illustration skills. The module will cover drawing and watercolour painting techniques to depict a variety of feather types and forms, with accuracy of colour and detail.

Embedding within the Learning Units, there will be demonstrations, individual advice and help, group discussions and specimens to work from. The artwork of historical and contemporary artists will be presented and discussed.

Programme

Natural History Illustration: Feathers will look at different drawing media - graphite, pen and charcoal and watercolour painting, gouache and pen/wash techniques to depict a variety of feather types and forms, with accuracy of colour and detail. So, start collecting up feathers now to get ready before delving into the fascinating world of feathers. Look for them out on walks or purchase from reputable sellers online. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:   

  1. Demonstrate an ability to draw a variety of feather types directly from observation and understand the correct terminology of the structure of feathers, their different forms and colours.
  2. Display painting techniques for the accurate depiction of the subject matter including knowledge of colour mixing and using different media & materials.
  3. Show evidence of knowledge of the artwork of historical and contemporary artists who have painted feathers and birds.
  4. Produce a field book with evidence of all study, to include exercises, collated images with artist research and body of artwork.
