Overview
How did exoskeletons or carapaces evolve? Where do they sit on the phylogenetic table of species? What makes them different?
This course will cover a variety of techniques required to accurately depict different insect forms and their specific details and colours. The artwork of historical and contemporary artists will also be discussed and analysed. Throughout the course demonstrations and group discussions, individual advice and assistance will be given.
Programme
The course will cover turtles, insects and shells as well as the Fibonacci Spiral , metamorphosis, luminosity and iridescence. The techniques and styles of contemporary and historical artists will also be discussed. Demonstrations, individual advice and assistance as well as handouts will be given throughout each session. Specimens will be available to work from.
Session 1: Insects: Metamorphosis, Luminosity and Iridescence.
Session 2: Translucent Wings and Detailed Bodies.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate techniques which allow the accurate depiction through drawing and painting of the form, textures, colours, patterns and detail of a variety shell, carapace, insect and mollusc types.
- Demonstrate problem solving and the exploration and development of the different drawing and painting techniques covered throughout the course and the use of different drawing and painting materials.
- Show an understanding of the evolution of the Carapace in different animals.
