Overview

This online, self-paced course will unlock some of the mysteries of the kingdom of fungi. Focusing on the ecology of fungi, we will discover the vital role fungi play in our ecosystems, how they function and what we can learn from them. This is not a course in how to identify fungi but one which seeks to begin to understand them.  
 
We will explore how a greater understanding of mycology can be applied practically, looking at possible applications in woodland management and agriculture.  
 
This is a theoretical course based on cutting edge research and will be taught online through Blackboard via presentations, videos, worksheets and webinars.

Programme

This is a self-paced, online learning module with 1-2 live webinars. The content is delivered using Video PowerPoint lectures and external video content. Activities, discussion boards and mini quizzes will be embedded throughout the course so the tutor can provide support and trickle feedback. A number of the activities will help the students to prepare for the assignments.  

Unit 1: What are fungi? 

Unit 2 How do fungi grow and reproduce?   

Unit 3: Fungi as chemists. 

Unit 4: Interconnections – the tangled underground world. 

Unit 5: Mycology applied – woodland management, restoration and creation. 

Unit 6: Mycology applied - Soil health, farming and gardening. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and characteristics of fungi.
  2. Identify and describe the multi-ecological roles that different groups of fungi play in the ecosystem.
  3. Evaluate the role fungi can play in woodland management, restoration and creation.
  4. Analyse the potential applications of mycology in sustainable farming practice.

Assessments

  1. Profile of a species of fungi and its ecological role (20%)
  2. Mycological applications - A case study (1500 words; 80%)

This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements.

As this is an online course, you would need the following:

  • Internet access.
  • Access to a laptop or computer with a web camera and microphone; the use of headphones might also benefit.
  • Use of the Chrome web browser where possible.
