Butterfly Survey

Overview

This module introduces the standard method for butterfly monitoring, as used in the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, (the transect), allowing students further practice of existing identifications skills, whilst applying these to survey sites and various habitats, monitoring butterfly populations over a period of time. The application of identification skills, and the implementation of techniques for survey, monitoring and recording will provide students with key field and conservation skills, enabling them to evaluate data and habitats for their conservation status.

Learning Outcomes

• Set up a transect route taking in a range of habitats.
• Carry out the standard transect method, identifying the butterfly species encountered.
• Record data from the standard transect method on the appropriate forms.
• Analyse and evaluate survey data.
• Critically analyse data from a published butterfly survey and evaluate its role in conservation.
