Overview

This practical module deals with the debate to define the boundaries between figurative and abstraction. It enables the student to understand and identify some of the rudimentary qualities of abstraction whilst encouraging discussion, reflection and evaluation. Students will gain experience of approaching different ways of abstracting an image from personal observational drawings as well as responding to expression and mood.

Programme

The purpose of this course is to introduce you to abstraction as a mode of picture making. You will be given a number of exercises that correspond to some of the key moments in art history associated with abstraction. Being familiar with the main features of abstract art, the methods used, and also the arguments for an against will help inform your own practice whether or not that is ultimately abstract or otherwise.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Use new drawing skills and identify the appropriate media for the task.
  2. Demonstrate mark-making techniques and the use of colour, tone and composition, and work from emotion and senses.
  3. Build a portfolio including large and small-scale work alongside a visual diary showing contextual awareness and recording methods and materials.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the formal qualities of abstraction.

Reading suggestions will be offered throughout the course.
