Overview

This module is designed for students with previous experience of working with pastels. The subject for the folio will focus on portraiture and the human figure, exploring how artists of the past have developed this theme, and how examples can be translated into contemporary practise. The use of pastels will be fully explored and developed, including a fuller understanding of how tone, colour and the composition of an image can be analysed in order to improve results.

Programme

This module is designed for students with previous experience of working with pastels or drawing in colour.  The subject for the folio will focus on portraiture and the human figure, exploring how artists of the past have developed this theme, and how examples can be translated into contemporary practices.  A clothed model will be available for part of the course only.  The use of pastels will be fully explored and developed, including a wider understanding of how tone, colour and the composition of an image can be analysed to improve results.  Themes may include figures in the garden, the end of the meal, the dance etc.  You will also have an opportunity to consider the double portrait.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Draw and paint in colour using chalk and oil pastel techniques.
  2. Complete the transition from tone (monochrome) to colour while working from observation using a range of themes.
  3. Develop and evaluate your creative potential with tutor support and in small group discussion.
  4. Practise the necessary skills to take work to a higher level.
  5. Build a portfolio of work evidencing current strengths, skills, and knowledge.

Reading Suggestions

Start collecting postcards or other reproductions, which interest you and relate to the nude or clothed figure either by contemporary artists or by artists from the past. Suggested artists include Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, Claudia Williams and Sally Strand.  These will also provide a good starting point for discussion when we first meet.

Also, begin your visual diary with a colour circle.  Choose either chalk or oil pastels to make it (or one of each).  Consider appropriate paper on which to work.  You may wish to copy images into your visual diary translating them into pastel paintings.
