Overview

This is a practical course consisting of 10 mini-modules for the student to complete at home, followed by two days working together in Aberystwyth on a final project. This will allow students to share the working experiments and come together for the final learning project.

Programme

During the course, the student explores numerous ways of working with textiles whilst exploring a broad range of traditional observational drawing and design methods. The course will introduce students to inventive weaving and textile construction techniques that do not require a loom or any specialist equipment. They will explore different yarns and textures to raise their awareness of design and colour theory, helping them understand the limitations of different fabrics.

They will learn basic natural dyeing techniques leading to further independent exploration, and they will be encouraged to build on an awareness of colour, surface and texture seen in the landscape and their immediate surroundings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Develop and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of textile materials and techniques through basic experimentation with textiles, using dyes, mordants, and non-loom weaving, effectively integrating mixed media and working in two and three dimensions, coupled with the application of colour theory, line, and tone to create a diverse portfolio of textile works.
  2. Cultivate and demonstrate an ability to source inspiration from the environment and art history, recording observations and translating them into visual and tactile textures in both two and three dimensions, and using the material they have collected to develop repeat patterns.
  3. Exhibit their design and communication skills by maintaining a visual diary, articulating personal responses to project briefs, and critically evaluating their own work.

Assessments

  1. Visual diary 20%
  2. Portfolio 80%
