Overview

Drawing with Scissors is designed to expand your drawing and painting skills through an introduction to the art of collage.  Since its emergence as an art form in the early 20th century, collage has continued to serve not only as a primary form of expression but as a principle means of developing new creative solutions. Continuing with the ‘eco’ slant provided in other modules such as ‘Cover to Cover’, this module is designed to expand students’ drawing and painting skills taking them into the dimension of collage. By incorporating an introduction to working three dimensionally through assemblage methods, it will provide a good route for student progression onto other 3D modules.

This module allows a developmental journey from the process of ‘drawing with paper’ through to collage printmaking methods and finally on to sculptural assemblage. Re-cycling, re-assembling and re-contextualizing are key elements. Technique workshops and referencing contemporary artists exploring this exciting medium will underpin this module.

Programme

This course will explore collage and will help you identify the processes involved in creating such works. The course will encourage discussion and debate and enable you to experiment with several different approaches of creating images using collage as a starting point to convey ideas.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of methods and materials associated with collage.
  2. Reflect consideration towards balance, scale , proportion and composition in portfolio of work.
  3. Demonstrate exploration of text within an aesthetic context as well as within a signifying context.
  4. Show the possibilities of combining collage and printmaking.
