Overview

This module will develop students understanding of materials, techniques and processes learnt at level one.  It will broaden the students’ knowledge of contemporary makers and will encourage the generation of ideas to feed into their personal outcomes. The development of a personal language from researched ideas will be evidenced in the visual diaries and with the judgment and technical skills employed in the realization of their final piece of work. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding and analysis of their research and be able to reflect on their work within the context of professional practice.

Programme

This course will help develop your understanding of materials, techniques and processes learnt at level one.  It will help you to develop your personal language from researched ideas evidenced in the visual diary and in the realization of your final piece of Ceramic work.  During this course we will investigate historical and contemporary work to feed your ideas.  The course should be very enjoyable, and teaching will be tailored to the individual.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  • Research widely, building up a body of references and evaluations in their visual diaries.
  • Demonstrate independent research and idea development linked to the progression of their ideas evidenced in the visual diary documenting and evaluating the entire process supported by photographs, technical skills with clay to realise ideas in more of the following areas, coiling slab building, mould making, casting or hand building.
  • Produce completed fired pieces of work including a minimum of 3 Maquettes.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of Health and Safety and good studio practice.
  • Participate in seminar, demonstrating ability to research topic and articulate viewpoints for group evaluation and constructive feed - back.

  • Visual diary 20%
  • Portfolio and self-directed works 80%
