Overview

This module is provided as a progression from Botanical Illustration 1 and is suitable for those who have already studied this art form or have achieved a pass in Botanical Illustration 1. Students will have the opportunity to learn about contemporary botanical artists and will be required to produce a body of work for display online or in an exhibition. The module will cover advanced watercolour techniques and extend the students skills in observational drawing and composition.

Programme

The course is taught through a series of video demonstrations, downloadable handouts and PowerPoint presentations across 6 units:

Unit 1 - Colour & Composition - Looking at Leaves.

Unit 2 - Playing with Patterns - Beans & Bulbs 

Unit 3 - Fruity Forms - in the Kitchen Garden or Cupboard!

Unit 4 - The Arrival of Spring - Seasonal Sketches

Unit 5 - Beautiful Blossoms - Flowers in Focus 

Unit 6 - How Things Grow - The Whole Plant 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:   

  1. Further demonstrate a development in botanical illustration techniques using a variety of materials and methods, developing accurate measuring, working to scale and recording.
  2. Demonstrate an insight into tonal mixing and appropriate use of materials when drawing from observation.
  3. Show awareness of the history of botanical illustration in the contemporary context.
  4. Work to deadlines and produce a body of work for exhibition.
  5. Source relevant information relating to the subject.
  6. Demonstrate evidence of critical analysis and evaluation of visual information
  7. Analyse structures of plants and natural forms and relate them to their habitat.
  8. Account for the role of criticism and the development and evaluation of personal inquiry.
  9. Demonstrate the concepts of design layout and the role of briefs.

Assessments

  1. Visual diary (30%)
  2. Portfolio (70%)

This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements.
