On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Understand and articulate increasingly complex theoretical underpinnings and specific terminology of film craft specialisms.

Understand and articulate contextual awareness of film craft specialisms.

Synthesise increasingly complex knowledge and skills of chosen specialisms and practically apply them to produce creative outcomes.

Manage individual or collaboration in group practical projects to successful completion.

Brief description

Building on FM22820 Film Craft 1, this module facilitates your learning journey and leanings towards a career pathway by developing further knowledge and skills in chosen film craft specialisms.

Aims

To facilitate students to continue their learning journey and leanings towards a career pathway by developing further knowledge and skills in chosen film craft specialisms.
To provide the opportunity to explore the aesthetic possibilities of, and to further develop practical skills in, the different production craft roles;
To introduce students to work that is innovative and creative in the application of craft skills;
To increase critical understanding of how theoretical and stylistic enquiry through practice leads to innovation in film form;
To identify and develop an extensive skill set for a personal vision as a filmmaker;
To apply this practical and theoretical learning to students’ own filmmaking work.

Content

Through a mixture of lectures and practical workshops, this module will facilitate further knowledge and skill development in film craft specialisms:
• Cinematography and Lighting
• Production Design
• Sound Recording and Design
• Editing and Post-Production

Students select one primary specialisation to study in greater depth over the first half of the module culminating in Assignment One - A Presentation (week 6). Starting around week 3, students begin Assignment Two – A Creative Outcome (submitted during the Exam Period). This creative outcome will be developed and supported by tutor interaction and may be either:

a) An individual project
b) A specialist role undertaken within a group film
