What is a Research degree?
A higher degree by research (eg MPhil or PhD) requires indepth study within a specific field which is compatible with the research interests of the University. Research students produce original and publishable work, the results of which are presented in a thesis and through an oral examination (viva).
An MPhil is a Master’s degree by research, and allows individuals to research an area of specific interest. The work should be original.
A PhD requires considerable commitment, with study taking at 3 years, and is usually required for those wishing to pursue a career in academia. The work should be original and of a standard worthy of publication in peer reviewed journals.
