The Year in Industry program is an opportunity for students to apply their academic knowledge, gain hands-on experience, and explore potential career paths. Nina Strzelecka, a Marine and Freshwater Biology with an Integrated Year in Industry BSc student, is an example of its impact.

Nina spent eight months at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, working on a project studying Acropora tenuis, a species of branching coral. Her research focused on metabarcoding coral samples from Ningaloo Marine Park to examine how varying environmental conditions influence microbial communities. This experience allowed her to develop expertise in DNA extraction and conduct fieldwork on research vessels and in state-of-the-art laboratories.

Beyond technical skills, Nina’s journey highlighted the importance of personal growth. Reflecting on her experience, she advises: “Put yourself out there and be yourself. That way you will attract the best group of people.”

Nina’s story showcases how the Year in Industry program opens doors to unique opportunities and career-defining moments.
