Professor Emyr Lewis was appointed to be the Head of Department in September 2019.  Before then was a practising lawyer in one of Wales' largest law offices, where he was Senior Partner, specialising in Public Law, Commercial Law and the law of State Aid and Public Procurement. During his time in practice he also worked for 12 years as the United Kingdom member on COMEX, the Council of Europe's Committee of Experts monitoring states' compliance with the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages, and was Senior Fellow in Welsh Law at the Wales Governance Centre at Cardiff University. He has given evidence to UK and Welsh Parliamentary Committees on devolution, language law, devolved tax law, elections and children's rights.  He was the first Deputy President of the Law Council for Wales and chaired its Education and Training Working Group. He was a member of the panel of experts advising the Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales. He is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and a Solicitor of the Senior Courts. He is also a poet who has won both the Chair and the Crown at the National Eisteddfod.
