S.H. Fergus Johnston

S. H. Fergus Johnston (1909-1991) was a lecturer and Professor in the History Department at Aberystwyth University for over forty years. His particular interest was military history and most of his collection of 1500 books was given to the University in 1986 and after his death. Although the earliest volumes date back to the 17c the collection is particularly strong in contemporary material covering the Napoleonic Wars and colonial battles from the Victorian period. There are also a wide range of valuable regimental histories. The collection includes a number of volumes with association interest, some books coming from the library of the Oxford historian Charles Oman, while others passed through the hands of eminent military and naval figures.
