Appointment of Dr. Dimitra Blana

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Dimitra Blana to the role of lecturer. She completed her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University in 2008, and will contribute to the department's strengths in biomechanics and motor control. Her research involves artificial control of movement for the restoration of function in spinal cord injury and other neuromuscular disorders.

Research and Teaching Success for Postgraduate Students

The Department is celebrating the achievements of its postgraduate students.  Congratulations to Dr Simon Payne, who passed his PhD viva on the 2nd June 2011.  Simon's thesis examined self-presentation and impression management motives.  Furthermore, the quality of the Department's postgraduate teaching has once again been recognised.  Sarah Forrest has been awarded the University's Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award.

Department receives funding to establish new International and UK-based links

Dr Jo Thatcher and Dr Emily Oliver have been awarded funding from the DAIWA Anglo-Japanese Foundation to initiate collaborative research with colleagues based at the University of Tsukuba in Japan.  The department is continuing to raise its profile within Wales and will be hosting two research experience placements for local sixth-form students, as well as one returning undergraduate student, with the support of Nuffield Foundation and a Walter Idris bursary.

The fourth meeting of the Physical Activity and Diabetes Research Development Group was hosted at the Department on the 27th January 2011. The meeting brought together researchers, clinicians and practitioners from across Wales with an interest in the role of physical activity and lifestyle in the prevention and management of diabetes.
