Profile

Olakunle is a geoscientist with significant academia and industry experience. Before joining Aberystwyth University as a lecturer, he had a stint in the geoenergy industry. He has been involved with and led several research and industry projects that extend across highly diverse geological settings like the Niger Delta, the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and offshore Southwest Australia.

His research integrates geology, geochemistry, and geophysics, merging the analysis of rock samples, cores, well logs, seismic data, and computer models to aid the search and mining of energy resources, and the injection, storage, and leakage of fluids in geological structures.

His current research interests include:

  • Characterisation of sediments and sedimentary rocks
  • Fluid systems analysis
  • Low carbon geoenergy exploration and exploitation
  • Impact of geostorage & energy extraction on the shallow crust

Olakunle holds a BSc (Hons) Geology from the University of Ilorin, MSc Petroleum Geochemistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and a PhD in Geology from Durham University.
