Arctic Expedition

23 July 2009

IGES glaciologist Alun Hubbard is taking part in a Greenpeace expedition to document the impact of climate change on the Greenland ice sheet. Spectacular photographs from the expedition can be viewed on The Guardian's website at: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/gallery/2009/jul/20/greenpeace-arctic-impacts-expedition

Alun is part of an inter-disciplinary team on board the Greenpeace ship, Arctic Sunrise, and is installing sensory devices on the remote Petermann Glacier to monitor whether it is breaking-up. Data collected from the expedition will be used by Greenpeace to present evidence on the impact of global warming in the Arctic at the Copenhagen Climate Summit in December, and will also feed into on-going scientific research by Alun and his colleagues on the dynamics of the Greenland ice sheet.
