In October, Dr Bleddyn Huws and Professor Gruffydd Aled Williams (who retired last August) visited Harvard Univeristy, U.S.A. They, along with two research students from the Department, Adrian Morgan and Daniel Ranbom, were invited to take part in Harvard University's Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures' Annual Conference. There was a strong representation from Aberystwyth University's Welsh Department this year as one of its former MA students, Erin Boon, is now a PhD student at Harvard. She will be involved in organising the conference next year and Professor Patrick Sims-Williams has received an invitation to deliver the conference's main lecture in October 2009, The John V. Kelleher's Memorial Lecture.
Dr Bleddyn Huws said: 'We were glad of the opportunity to strengthen the links between us and our peers at Harvard University's Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures, and it was great to see our students being given the opportunity to share the same stage as Harvard University's students, and to compare their experiences.'
Professor Gruffydd Aled Williams also delivered a lecture at Harvard University’s Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures last March. The lecture was entitled ‘Grief Transmuted: Lewys Glyn Cothi’s Lament for His Son’.
