How can I improve my CV?
First, read the Prospects How to Write a CV guide and draft your CV.
Then, upload your CV to CareerSet for review, signing in with your Aberystwyth email address and password. (For graduate access, please email us at the address below.)
Alternatively, send your CV to careers@aber.ac.uk and request a review.

How can I speak to a careers adviser?
The quickest way is to visit our drop in service at Hugh Owen Library, Floor D, available Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 12pm (term time). No appointment needed.
Drop-in times over the summer period are 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm, from Monday 1st July 2024.

Where do I go for my guidance appointment?
In-person guidance appointments are held in Group Study Room 1, Floor D, Hugh Owen Library. (Map here.)
Online appointments are on Microsoft Teams. Your Careers Consultant will send you the link before your appointment time – check your inbox before logging on.

Can I access the Careers Service after I have graduated?
Yes, we offer a lifelong service and no matter when you graduated, we are still available to help you with your careers guidance, advice and information needs. Have a look at our Graduates webpage for further details.

To log in as a Graduate, click here, and then follow the Forgotten your password? link to set a new password.

How do I find part-time jobs on campus?
To find part-time jobs on campus you will need to register with AberWorks, which is managed by the University’s Human Resources department. Click here to register. For more information, email hr@aber.ac.uk or call (01970) 628555.

Where can I find part-time work in Aberystwyth?
To find part-time work in Aberystwyth, try:
- ABERcareers – Careers Service portal with a selection of part-time roles.
- Find a job – UK government search page for jobs advertised in UK job centres.
- Indeed – click here for part-time jobs in Aberystwyth.
- Current Vacancies - Aberystwyth University recruitment page with occasional jobs suitable for student applicants.
- Social media – many local employers advertise vacancies via their individual pages or via groups such as Aberystwyth jobs / Swyddi aberystwyth.
Keep an eye on shop windows around town, as lots of local businesses recruit that way. You will need a CV handy for this - bring a copy to our drop-in at Hugh Owen library and we’ll review it for you (Term time, Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 12pm). Alternatively, send a copy to careers@aber.ac.uk

What is the Year in Employment Scheme (YES)?
YES is coordinated by the Careers Service and enables undergraduate students on 3-year degree courses to undertake an industrial placement between Year 2 and Year 3.
To find out more, have a look at the YES webpage and the YES fact sheet. We also recommend that you discuss YES in more depth with a Careers Consultant, either in your department or by booking a guidance appointment, to ensure you understand the requirements and implications of taking part in YES.

I want to do the Year in Employment Scheme (YES) – how do I proceed?
If you’re in the 2nd year of a 3-year undergraduate degree, you can register interest in YES via our online form to access help and support with finding a placement and arranging participation in YES (this does not commit you to definitely doing YES).

Where can I find information on applying for a Master’s degree?
You can find information on applying for a Master’s degree on Prospects’ Applying for a Masters degree page. Once you are ready to apply, visit the Careers Service drop in at Hugh Owen library or book a guidance appointment with a Careers Consultant, who will be happy to advise you on your application. I’m looking for a 12-month industrial placement, or summer internship – where can I find out what’s available?

I’m interested in work experience. What are my options?
Visit our drop-in service at Hugh Owen Library or book a guidance appointment with one of our Careers Consultants to discuss the various options and help available for finding work experience.
Look into ABERforward, a placement scheme run by the Careers Service, and check if you are eligible for the current scheme. You’ll also find details of any live placements in the ABERforward scheme listing on ABERcareers.
You might also be interested in Career Readiness Support, which is aimed specifically at students with little or no work experience, who also identify with characteristics that might mean they face barriers to finding employment.
Consider volunteering – you’ll find opportunities advertised on ABERcareers and we also recommend you look at the opportunities coordinated by the Students’ Union Volunteering team.

Can I do ABERforward?
You can check the current eligibility criteria for ABERforward placements on the ABERforward webpage. The criteria may change from year to year depending on available funding, so keep an eye on information updates. Are there Careers Fairs I can go to when studying at Aber, to meet employers?
Yes, we arrange a large Careers Fair on the Penglais campus usually each year in the Autumn. We also arrange employer events during the year, including CareerFest each February. Details will be listed in the Events section of ABERcareers and also circulated via our emails and other promotional activities.
Your academic department may also arrange for employers to come into lectures.
As well as this, we support external employers and organisations from a wide range of sectors by also promoting their events, vacancies and opportunities on ABERcareers.

I’d like to develop skills to build my employability
Book a guidance appointment with one of our Careers Consultants to discuss the options available to you. For example, ABERforward placements and Career Readiness Support are both designed to support students who are seeking to develop confidence and work-related skills (eligibility criteria apply). The AberSkills hub is also a very useful place to find several ways of boosting your skills in one place. Our Careers Consultants also run a series of
workshops throughout the year designed to help you to become and feel ready for graduate employment – all the details can be found in the Events section of ABERcareers.
