The Department of Mathematics has been awarded the coveted title of Department of the Year at the Aberystwyth Students’ Union Staff and Student Awards 2018.
The annual awards celebrate the exceptional contributions of staff, students, academic representatives and departments at Aberystwyth University.
Hosted by Aberystwyth Students Union with the support of the University, this year’s ceremony took place in the Great Hall at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Thursday 26 April 2018.
Now in their seventh year, this year’s awards attracted 238 nominations in 16 categories, with all awards nominated, decided and presented by Aberystwyth University students.
Professor Matthew Jarvis from the Department of English and Creative Writing was crowned Lecturer of the Year.
Commenting on the success of the awards, Aberystwyth University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Elizabeth Treasure said: “Once again this year, we have had a fantastic evening, thanking and celebrating exceptional people and departments that help make this University so special. The heartfelt tributes paid by students to individual lecturers and departments were a joy to hear, and reinforce the reasons why Aberystwyth was named UK University of the Year for Teaching Quality in The Times & Sunday Times 2018 Good University Guide. Warmest congratulations to all winners and nominees, and to the Students’ Union for organising with such elegance and efficiency.”
Emma Beenham, Aberystwyth Students’ Union Academic Affairs Officer for 2017-18, said: “Our Staff and Students Awards celebrate everything that makes Aberystwyth University great – our staff who go above and beyond to bring their subject to life or to support students, students who do an exceptional job of representing and supporting their peers, and those staff who work quietly in the background whose contribution is so valuable to the day to day running of the University.”
