31 May 2013
Professor Martin Jones, Pro Vice-Chancellor (PVC) at Aberystwyth University, has been appointed Director of the White Rose Social Science Doctoral Training Centre.
The Centre, accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council, is a collaboration across the social sciences at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. Professor Jones will also be taking up a Chair of Human Geography at Sheffield.
Professor Jones, who takes up his new post at the end of August, joined Aberystwyth University as a Lecturer in 1998.
As a leading economic and political geographer, he has held the positions of Reader, Professor, Director of the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, Dean of Social Sciences, and Co-Director of the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD). He has been a Pro Vice-Chancellor and member of the University Executive since 2009.
Professor April McMahon, Vice-Chancellor at Aberystwyth congratulated Professor Jones on his new appointment. “We extend our warmest congratulations to Martin on his appointment to this exciting new role and thank him for his considerable number of years of service to Aberystwyth.”
“Martin has contributed to all aspects of work at the University and has also played a considerable role in developing links between the University and the local community. This is best illustrated with his role in developing the highly successful Aber Cycle Fest which was held recently, and for which the University has been one of the major sponsors.”
Professor Martin Jones said: "Aberystwyth University has offered me a wealth of different senior management experiences, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a Head of Department, Dean, and then Pro Vice-Chancellor since 2009. My PVC portfolio has been significant under the leadership of Professor April McMahon and I would like to personally thank her for giving me the research portfolio to lead. This has also included postgraduate responsibilities, which have proved critical to my appointment as Director of the White Rose Social Science Doctoral Training Centre."
“I wish the Vice-Chancellor and Aberystwyth University every success in the future as it continues to deliver the best for Aberystwyth, its students and staff.”, he added.
The University has initiated an internal recruitment process to appoint a successor to Professor Jones.
