The One Show presenter, Alex Jones returned to Aberystwyth University on Saturday 27 April 2013 to be confirmed as a Fellow of Aberystwyth University.

As part of her visit to the University, Alex met with students, staff and members of the local community during a mock One Show interview and a question and answer session hosted by the Head of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, Dr Jamie Medhurst.

Concluding the afternoon’s visit, Dr Jamie Medhurst presented her to the University’s Vice-President, Gwerfyl Pierce-Jones for conferral of the Fellowship.

Alex was nominated for a Fellowship during 2012 but was unable to attend the ceremony due to existing filming commitments.

Professor April McMahon, Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University commented:"The title of Fellow is the highest possible honour awarded by the University which recognises distinguished individuals who have a close association with Aberystwyth or who have made an outstanding contribution to professional or public life in Wales.

“I was particularly pleased to welcome Alex back to Aberystwyth and to the University and to recognise her achievements as an individual and alumna of the University.  She was extremely generous in spending so much of her time with our students and staff.”

Her department has seen many changes since she was a student here in the mid-nineties, including building the development of a new building on the Penglais Campus.

Commenting on the Fellowship and her visit to Aberystwyth, Alex said: “It was a real pleasure to visit the University and a particular honour to receive the Fellowship.  Aberystwyth is a very special place and I have some fantastic memories from my time here as a student.

During her visit, Alex was asked to participate in a mock One Show, where students interviewed and filmed a short chat show programme, followed an open session for students and staff where the audience asked a variety of questions.

Alex commented: “Being on the other sofa and being interviewed, rather than the interviewer was quite an experience. The students did exceptionally well and the studio facilities rivalled those of the BBC’s studio in London.”

Alex is an alumna of the University, who graduated with a BA in Drama in 1998.  After graduating, Alex held a range of roles within the media, particularly as a children’s television presenter for S4C.
