Foreign policy challenges

The UK’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sir Emyr Jones Parry, will discuss and debate contemporary foreign policy issues of the European Union and the United Kingdom on Wednesday 2 May at Aberystwyth University.

Sir Emyr, who is President of Aberystwyth University, retired from the Foreign Office in 2007.

During a distinguished diplomatic career he also served as Permanent Representative to NATO in Brussels, chaired the Security Council of the UN for four terms as well as EU meetings during five UK Presidencies between 1982 and 2005.

The issues Sir Emyr worked on include the enlargement of NATO and the EU, European foreign policy, defence policy, Iran, Kosovo, Iraq, development policy, and UN affairs.

He was appointed President of Aberystwyth University in 2008 and Chair of the Open University Business School’s International Advisory Board, which supports the global development of the school.

The discussion, which forms part of the University’s Centre for European Studies’ annual address, will take the format of a question and answer session and will be held in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building at 4pm.
