Aberystwyth Branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol

Dr Anwen Jones, Chair of the Aberystwyth Branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

The committee responsible for the work of the University’s Branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol met for the first time on Wednesday 25 January.

Chaired by Dr Anwen Jones, this is an important development in the process of planning the University’s Welsh medium academic provision.

Dr Anwen Jones is the Director of Learning and Teaching at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth and she was appointed as Chair of the Aberystwyth branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol in December 2011.

Dr Jones has been involved in a number of projects which originate from the early days of establishing the College which include the establishment of the web-journal Gwreddon and establishing the cooperative modules in scripting.  She is the author of the the National Theatres in Context Series (GPC 2007) and editor of Wil Sam, Dyn y Theatr (Gwasg Carreg Gwalch, 2009).

Dr Jones commented “It is a privilege and an opportunity to lead the branch during an exciting time in Welsh medium Higher Education and I’m keen to ensure that the branch is active, creative and supports the relationship with the Coleg but also the University.”

The Aberystwyth Branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is located in the Centre for Welsh Language Services, and has a designated Branch Officer who works as Welsh medium provision co-ordinator on behalf of the Coleg in Aberystwyth. The Branch is responsible for supporting academic departments in developing Welsh medium provision and resources, and for ensuring that the University takes full advantage of the new and exciting opportunities offered by the Coleg. The committee will observe closely Welsh medium developments and monitor the University’s Strategy on Welsh medium provision. 

Contributions from students are important to the work and the student body is represented on the committee by the UMCA President and representatives from undergraduate and postgraduates who study through the medium of Welsh.

Aberystwyth University works in partnership with the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, which was established in April 2011, and its aim is to promote teaching and learning through the planning of Welsh-medium opportunities in Higher Education. The Coleg does not have one geographical location, but rather, it works with existing Higher Education Institutions in Wales.

The University has received funding from the Coleg in 2011-12 to develop a range of projects to develop learning and teaching resources in academic departments; undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for students who study through the medium of Welsh; and 6 new Welsh medium lectureships in a range of subjects to develop further provision through the medium of Welsh.
