A new hall of residence has been officially opened by Aberystwyth University in preparation for the start of the new academic year.

Rosser-G Block was opened by Professor April McMahon, Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University, today, Tuesday 20 September.

This exciting development represents an investment of £3m and provides en-suite accommodation for sixty postgraduate students along with six well-equipped kitchen/diner/TV lounge areas and an integral laundry room.

Located on the Penglais Campus close to many of the University’s central facilities, this new building provides spacious modern accommodation designed to meet the expectations of postgraduate students from all over the world.

The new building has been rated “Very Good” for the sustainability of its design, construction and operation under BREEAM scheme – Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method.

Professor April McMahon said: ‘I am delighted to be opening this new development. It marks the University’s on-going commitment both to the student experience, and to sustainability and the environment. It represents a significant investment in student accommodation and forms a part of a longer term strategy for residential development which will meet the University’s wider learning, teaching and student experience ambitions.”

New postgraduate students will be moving in to Rosser G from Friday 23 September 2011 onwards. The next stage of the Aberystwyth University accommodation strategy will see a range of self-catered accommodation for 1,000 students being developed on a site located behind Pentre Jane Morgan. The first phase of this development, planning consent permitting, will be ready for the 2013/14 academic year.

The University worked with Aberystwyth based architect Dilwyn Roberts and Cardiff based Asbri Planning on the design of the building, which was manufactured and assembled on site by Thurston Building Solutions from Wakefield. Another local company, Afan Construction, has been responsible for car parking and other external works.
