University Council approves IGER merger
At its meeting on Wednesday 4 July, the Council of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth approved the proposed merger of the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research with the University.
The merger will create an internationally competitive centre of excellence in environmental science, and will be of considerable economic benefit for the pastoral land use sector in Wales and beyond.
Its impact will be further strengthened by the development of strong links with the University of Wales Bangor which build on the Research and Enterprise Partnership which has already been established by the two institutions.
Professor Noel Lloyd, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth said:
“I warmly welcome the decision which has been taken by the University's Council today. This is a tremendous opportunity to create a world class centre for research and innovation in environmental science and sustainable land use. It is a major development in science and innovation for Wales. ”
This decision follows a similar announcement by IGER's sponsor, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, on Friday 4 May.
