Sending goats rather than cards

Christmas cards were noticeable by their absence in the Department of Information Studies during the run up to Christmas as staff abandoned the frantic exchange of cards and made donations towards World Vision Alternative Christmas Presents.

Departmental Administrator, Sue Clarke, was one of the organisers.
“We were hopeful of raising sufficient funds to purchase a couple of goats and there was much friendly banter about these potential Department billies. We've actually been able to buy a herd of goats (no kidding!) and more as follows:  A meal for 140 children as part of the Drop in Centre for Working Children in Cambodia; a scholarship for a child as part of the Programme for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Ghana; and vaccinations for 2 children as part of a Health and Water Project in Sierra Leone.  All this and the herd of goats as part of the Livestock Loans Programme in Zimbabwe.”

“If anyone wants to find out more from this very worthwhile and practical way of helping people in poverty, see the World Vision website  at www.greatgifts.org. Our gifts came from the categories of gifts classified as ‘Most Needed', ‘Education’ and ‘Health’”, she added.
