Nataliia goes to Modelling Camp

07 October 2024

Nataliia Adukova, a PhD student in the Department of Mathematics, recently attended the UK Graduate Modelling Camp at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge. The Camp provides early career mathematicians with experience of hands-on mathematical modelling of real-world challenges from science and industry.

Nataliia’s group was tasked with "Detecting Fake Data Through Anomaly Detection". Her team solved the problem of detecting fake audio data: they were given recordings of an audiobook either read by a real person or created by a deep neural network. The team used two methods to distinguish real from fake audio: analysis of the peaks in the waveform can indicate abnormality, and (Fourier) transforming the wave can accentuate differences between real and fake data.

Nataliia said “I never thought that I would be able to learn so much in just one week. All the students in our team were from different areas, but there were no specialists in this task. It was really interesting to test our skills in addressing a real-world challenge and to experience the practical application of knowledge”

Nataliia works on the EffectFact project coordinated in Aberystwyth.
