Profile

Date joined RBI and previous employment

Emma joined RBI as a Research Development Officer for the Department of Life Sciences in August 2022. Before that, Emma completed her PhD in DLS, which focused on investigating alternative models for Alzheimer's Disease, and specifically investigated the behavioural and molecular suitability of the sheep, as a large animal model. Emma has also previously worked as an Associate Lecturer within the department and as a Knowledge Exchange Fellow with Farming Connect.

Main responsibilities at previous employment

As an Associate Lecturer, Emma taught students on a range of animal behaviour and zoology related module, and when working with Farming Connect, Emma wrote a number of technical publications on a range of agricultural topics, including: the impact of herbal leys on the health and performance of grazing lambs, methods of pregnancy detection in dairy cattle, supporting farmland birds and developing short food supply chains.

Education and work experience

Emma completed an MSc in Equine Science at AU, and then after a short period working with the Animal and Plant Health Agency, completed a PhD in the Department of Life Sciences. This focused on assessing the suitability of sheep as an alternative large animal model of Alzheimer's disease. Following a number of other short-term roles within DLS, Emma moved into the current research development role with RBI.

Experience and knowledge

Emma has a significant knowledge of post-graduate research, research funding and research communication in the biological sciences.

Main responsibilities within RBI

Emma's role is to support the submission of research grant applications, and to provide support with searching for grant funding opportunities, drafting cases of support, calculating costs, completing application forms and helping staff understand internal and external research grant procedures.

Most enjoyable part of working at Aberystwyth University

Emma enjoys working alongside all of the researchers in DLS, and especially enjoys being the first to hear about all of the amazing research projects that are in the pipeline at the University.
