Eleanor is currently working part-time in Laboratory Technician and Lifelong Learning Tutor roles. She has recently submitted her PhD thesis “Ecophysiological Adaptation in Cryoconite Bacteria and the Relationship to Horizontal Gene Transfer”. Eleanor completed her MPhil "The Response of the Cryoconite Microbial Community to Cryospheric Stresses" in 2020 and her BSc Hons in Microbiology in 2018, both at Aberystwyth University. 

Eleanor is an AFHEA and a STEM Ambassador. She has previously worked for the Office for Students as a TEF Natural Sciences and Engineering & Technology panellist.

Additional Information

Eleanor was a peer mentor in the University for a number of years and was a finalist for both Mentor of the Year in 2022 and Support Staff Member of the Year in 2023. During her BSc, she was an Undergraduate IBERS Institute Representative, an Academic Representative and a Mature Students Officer. She won the inaugural James Nicholson Memorial Award in 2018 for her role in supporting students.

She has presented and volunteered in numerous outreach events, including presenting at the Science and the Senedd Conference in Cardiff in 2022, volunteering on several occasions for British Science Week, presenting and volunteering for Microbiology Society events and a number of other STEM ambassador outreach activities.

Previous experience as an Associate Lecturer and Senior Demonstrator. 

Research

During both her PhD and MPhil research projects, Eleanor focused on the microbial ecology and genomics of psychrophiles. Additionally, between her second and third years of her BSc, she completed two funded summer studentship research projects. She has presented her research in a number of conferences, winning poster prizes on two occasions (2018 and 2022).
