Darren is mental health lecturer in healthcare education and field lead for mental health within the Healthcare Education Centre.  He has previously been involved in curriculum development within pre- and post-registration nursing programmes.

Darren has been a Registered Mental Health Nurse for over twenty years and is Registered Nurse Tutor with the Nursing and Midwifery Council since completing his PGCEd with the University of Wales, Newport in 2005. He was awarded a Master’s in Nursing from Cardiff University and a Master’s in Education (distinction) from the University of Glamorgan, in which he completed a research project on the use of simulation within pre-registration mental health nursing.  He also coordinated the mental health nursing part of a NMC pilot looking at the use of simulation within pre-registration nursing programmes. He has also been external examiner for both pre- and post-registration nursing programmes.  He is a peer reviewer for Mental Health Nursing Practice.  He is also a member of EPICC Network looking at developing spiritual care competence through innovative education and compassionate care. 

Darren has experience and specific interest in older adult mental health nursing, in particular dementia.  His research interests include dementia, and the role of simulation within nurse education. He has experience of grounded theory, nominal group technique and illuminative evaluation research methodologies.
