A Postgrad’s Experience at the Joint Parasitology Meeting 2025

24 March 2025
Attending the Joint Parasitology Meeting 2025 in Würzburg was an unforgettable experience. This incredible conference brought together researchers from the British Society for Parasitology (BSP), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Parasitologie (DGP), and the Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Tropenmedizin und Parasitologie (SSTMP). As a postgraduate student, I was thrilled to present my research and have the opportunity to discuss my findings with experts in the field.
My Research: Schistosomiasis and Gene Transfer
My work focuses on how Schistosoma mansoni infection affects gene transfer between bacteria in the gut - something known as horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Specifically, I study insertion sequence (IS) elements, which help bacteria exchange genes. Our findings suggest that HGT works differently in infected and uninfected mice, both in standard lab conditions and in models that mimic human gut microbiomes. Sharing these results led to some really interesting conversations about microbial evolution, host-parasite interactions, and even links to antimicrobial resistance.
Networking and New Ideas
One of the best parts of the conference was meeting other researchers and exchanging ideas. Talking with experts in parasitology, microbiology, and immunology helped me think about my project from new angles. I also had the chance to explore potential collaborations, which could take my research in exciting new directions!
A Unique Social Event: Wine Tasting in the Residenz Vaults
Beyond the science, the conference had some fantastic social events, including a wine tasting at the historic Staatlicher Hofkeller. This was a great way to relax and chat with fellow researchers in a more informal setting. It was fascinating to connect with people from different parts of the world, all working towards a deeper understanding of parasitology.
Gratitude and Looking Ahead
I am incredibly grateful to my supervisors, Dr Martin Swain, Dr Wayne Aubrey, and Dr Gabriel Rinaldi, for their support in my research. A huge thank you to Prof Jo Hamilton, Dr Josephine Forde-Thomas, and Dr Gabriel Rinaldi for their guidance during the conference. I also sincerely appreciate The BSP for awarding me a travel grant, which made it possible for me to attend.
The Joint Parasitology Meeting 2025 reinforced the importance of collaboration in science. I left feeling inspired and excited to continue exploring the fascinating world of host-microbiome interactions in schistosomiasis. I can't wait to build on these discussions and see where this research takes me next!
