Dan Baker
28 February 2025
Dan Baker, currently undertaking a Year in Industry as part of his Genetics and Biochemistry degree, has achieved an incredible milestone. Following his research placement with Dr. Andrew Lloyd in IBERS, Dan will embark on a fully funded 12-week internship in Manitoba, Canada.
In Canada, Dan will join Dr. Matthew Bakker’s research group to investigate species interactions that influence the sustainability and productivity of cropping systems. This opportunity allows Dan to apply and further develop the techniques he refined in Dr. Lloyd’s lab, including gene-editing tools such as CRISPR Cas9.
Securing one of the highly competitive Mitacs internships is no small feat. These positions are open to undergraduates from Europe, the USA, Mexico, and Pakistan and involve multiple rounds of interviews. Reflecting on this achievement, Dan expressed gratitude to Dr. Andrew Lloyd and Dr. Paula Hughes (Year in industry coordinator) for their support and guidance throughout the application process.
Looking ahead, Dan is considering a career in research, potentially within an industry setting. “I would like to thank Dr. Andrew Lloyd and all of the colleagues in the lab who helped enhance my skills and gave me the confidence to apply for this position,” he shared.
Dan’s success highlights the incredible opportunities available to students in the Department of Life Sciences.
