About Us
Welcome to the Department of Life Sciences. We’re an internationally recognised teaching and research department.
We offer undergraduate, postgraduate and distance learning courses in Agriculture, Animal and Aquatic Sciences, Biochemistry and Genetics, Biosciences, Ecological Sciences, Human Biology and Health, Nursing, Sport and Exercise Science and Veterinary Science. A number of our undergraduate courses are accredited by the Royal Society of Biology (RSB). All our courses offer opportunities to build your career portfolio by undertaking study abroad or work experience placements not only in the UK, but in several other countries.
We’re proud of our active student community which promotes both engagement with discipline and social activities. Our graduates have commented extensively on the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and the excellent academic and pastoral support given by our staff. This has also been duly recognised with excellent results in the National Student Survey.
In addition to our teaching, our researchers contribute towards solving global issues such as the prevention of deadly diseases, food security and crop growth in drought-prone soil, developing sustainable and environmentally friendly fuels, and studying the effects of climate change on ecosystems. Our researchers are also your lecturers, ensuring that you are taught by experts in their fields.
As a department, we are recognised internationally for our plant breeding programmes, as well as our research expertise in animal and crop science. Within the Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock, we focus on the efficient production of sheep meat while minimising environmental impact, while the Pwllpeiran Upland Research Platform provides a research resource to investigate upland farmed ecosystems. Our farms extend to over 800 hectares and act as innovation sites for the Welsh Government’s knowledge transfer service to industry.
The National Plant Phenomics Centre is a unique facility for delivering breeding solutions and advances for key crop species. The BEACON biorefining centre works to build the bio or green economy by collaborating with industry to develop products, services and technologies for a greener, more sustainable Wales. Meanwhile the Aberystwyth Innovation and Enterprise Campus brings academia and businesses from the bioscience, agri-tech, and food and drinks sectors together on a brand-new £40.5m campus.
If you have never visited Aberystwyth before, why not visit us on an Open Day and find out why we are ranked the best university in Wales for student satisfaction and teaching quality.
