09 August 2017
Law and Criminology students at Aberystwyth University have given their studies a resounding verdict of approval in an influential UK-wide poll.
In the National Student Survey (NSS) published 9 August 2017, 90% of Aberystwyth Law School students agreed they were satisfied overall compared to the average UK figure of 84%.
When asked specifically about the teaching on their course, 94% said they were satisfied overall.
For the subject area of Social Policy which includes Criminology, overall levels of satisfaction in the latest NSS were 100%, with 92% satisfaction for the Criminology degree scheme and 93% for the Criminology with Applied Psychology degree scheme.
The Law School’s results are part of a wider success story at Aberystwyth University which is rated the best in Wales and one of the top five higher education institutions in the UK for overall student satisfaction, according to the 2017 NSS (weblink).
The results show that overall satisfaction amongst students at Aberystwyth University as a whole stands at 91% - well above the average UK figure of 84%.
Professor Jo Crotty, Director of the Institute of Business & Law at Aberystwyth University, said: “'We are very pleased with the NSS results for the Institute of Business and Law. The overall satisfaction rate of 90% for the Law School is particularly good and reflects the hard work of the staff. The result for the 'learning resources' of 92% for the Law School is also excellent and shows the level of investment and commitment to our students.”
The NSS figures follow closely on the heels of the latest employability figures for UK universities which showed that 100% of Law graduates were in work or further study six months after leaving Aberystwyth University in 2016.

The National Student Survey is conducted by IPSOS Mori on behalf of the UK’s higher education funding councils and gathers the opinions of final-year students in universities, colleges and alternative providers.
It asks students to score their university across a wide range of questions including quality of teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, learning community, the student voice and overall satisfaction.
Aberystwyth University’s rankings are based on the overall satisfaction question and use the list of higher education institutes from The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.
