Legitimacy and Hegemony
Professor Ian Clark was funded by the ESRC on a project entitled ‘Legitimacy and Hegemony’. The project concerned the leading role played by the United States in the contemporary order, the issues of international legitimacy to which this gives rise, and the means by which they might best be addressed. As part of this Professorial Fellowship, he wrote Hegemony in International Society (Oxford University Press).
In addition to Professor Clark’s monograph, the project also comprises an international collaborative dimension. Therefore the concepts of international legitimacy and hegemony were explored through a series of workshops, looking both at regional dynamics and implications for key international organizations, mainly the UN Security Council and its proposals for reform. Prof Clark also gave numerous presentations on the subject and published a number of related articles.
